Robert DuPont (’79), the first director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in the 1970s, and Wilson Compton, the current deputy director of NIDA, will discuss the critical issue of the 21st century U.S. heroin and prescription opioids epidemic. They will present the latest findings of brain and neurosciences research and review their relevance to individuals’ and populations’ health and to treatment interventions. They will address the relationship between research, public health and health policy as evidenced in congressional initiatives on this subject. NIDA supports most of the world’s health research related to preventing drug abuse, treating addiction and addressing serious health consequences of drug abuse.
