Psychiatric Genetics Update: Risk of Illness, Implications for Treatment
OVERVIEW
With the recent explosion in genetics research, much attention has focused on the role of genetics in the pathogenesis, transmission across generations, and
treatment of serious mental disorders. The search for a single gene explaining the development of mental or substance use disorders was abandoned long ago as
unrealistically simplistic for complex disorders. However, the expansion of large data bases and the development of increasingly sophisticated methodologies present growing opportunities to better understand and characterize mental and substance use disorders. Advances in pharmacogenomics also now provide tools for the
clinician to appreciate the potential pharmacokinetics and perhaps pharmacodynamic actions of many psychotropic medications prior to prescribing. In this half-day Symposium, attendees will have the chance to review the current state of knowledge about the genetic basis of mental and substance use disorders. Presentations and a panel discussion will address issues about when and how genetic testing can be useful in clinical practice. For more information see the event flyer.
